Introduction to Fiction Writing

Learn the basic concepts and techniques of writing fiction with the aim of heightening your sense of language and developing your ability to solve problems of structure, characterization, viewpoint, story line, imagery, dialogue and believability.

Starting on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 Thaïs will teach a 10-week course entitled, “Introduction to Fiction Writing.” This course will be live and in-person at UC Berkeley Extension’s Downtown San Francisco Campus. Thaïs will evaluate your manuscripts and allow time for classroom discussion.

Required reading materials include John Gardner’s The Art of Fiction, Z. Z. Packer’s “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere,” Lauren Groff’s “L. Debard and Aliette: A Love Story,” Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” Lorrie Moore’s “People Like That Are the Only People Here,” Wells Tower’s “Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned,” E. L. Doctorow’s “Edgemont Drive,” Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” Bharati Mukherjee’s “The Management of Grief,” and Grace Paley’s “Wants.”

Founded in 1891, UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Today, Extension offers more than 2,000 courses each year, including online courses, along with more than 75 professional certificates and specialized programs of study.
